Established in the early 1980’s by John and Sheila Dixon in Sarsfieldstown, County Westmeath, John Dixon Plant Hire has grown from humble beginnings in land reclamation, site clearance and agriculture hire, to become one of the leading road rail plant suppliers in Ireland.


“We pride ourselves on being skilled and experienced in all aspects of rail work plant hire and agriculture work,” says CEO, John Dixon. “Our goal is to deliver the best possible service to our clients.” John explains that because of this commitment “We are continually challenging ourselves to reach the next level of achievement.”


In addition to their rail work, the company is proud to provide a wide variety of services to the agricultural industry. With focus on the customer satisfaction and the use of top-quality machinery, John Dixon Plant Hire can supply agricultural clients with a myriad of services, including raking, baling and wrapping; mowing and hedge cutting; slurry, muck and fertiliser spreading; crop spraying and land reclamation.


“Each job requires special tools,” John notes. “We are continuously investing in machinery and equipment to ensure work being delivered is to the best of our ability.” Speaking about the company’s work with the rail industry, he explains”We have a wide range of equipment, all of which has been customised for the railway environment. We are constantly looking for ways to provide the complete service and this led us to our present position with a range of machines and attachments for every rail related job.”


John understand the importance of forward momentum in business. “Continual development is important in any business, and it is vitally important to the long-term viability of the operation,” he says.


Speaking about operating a successful business in teh current economic climate, John notes: “Inflation brings considerable challenges for our industry. Rising prices impact on materials, labour hiring rates, machinery costs, machinery parts and more.” He also highlights the rising price of fuel as a particular challenge.


John believes that innovation is the key to keeping John Dixon plant hire ahead of the competition. He believes the company engages in a constant cycle f creation and improvement to solve problems and meet client needs. “We have the ability to carry out any job successfully and on time and we have a wide variety of machinery affording the customer more choice,” he explains.

When reflecting on the greatest lessons he has learned in business, John says “Hard work can outweigh talent and intelligence and this is absolutely necessary if you want to success,” he concludes. “This not only means working hard when things are going well, but working hareder when things are not. It means taking calculated risks and sticking to them, no matter how challenging they are.
